Chilean Health Sector Layoffs Announced

By F. Ellsworth Lockwood

Coinciding with the Christmas season, an unknown number of jobs are either being axed or the hours reduced the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile.

Only days after the death of former dictator Augusto Pinochet a friend of mine with direct knowledge of The Reference Institute of Oral Pathology (Instituto de Referencia de PatologĂa Oral) an informal source reported that this major health education system in Santiago has given notice to perhaps as many as 10,000 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, dentists professors and others.

The "mala noticia" bad news arrived at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Time. If the source is accurate, the move would shut down the university's IREPO program, known for its research on oral cancer.

"They laid off all ... who work in 'IREPO.'" my Chilean friend said, including adminstrators in medical technology, and various others. "From surgery they have dismissed five, dentists from diagnostics. They have cut back the hours of 50 percent of the personnel in the university, and we have some 20,000 who work here."

The source, who works in dentistry, seemed floored by the news, wiping tears from her eyes as she said, "Just imagine what is happening here, and not just at the level of the university, but also at the level of banking; they too are laying off personnel."
